After this, China’s Commerce Ministry put 20 Japanese companies in the export control list, while 20 other companies have been kept in a separate watch list. Companies included in the export control list will no longer be able to import ‘dual use’ goods from China. Dual use items are those that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

Many big Japanese companies have come under the scanner of this action, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (shipbuilding, combat aircraft engines and marine machinery), Kawasaki Heavy Industries And Fujitsu Major companies like are said to be involved. According to China’s Commerce Ministry, these companies will also be banned from supplying dual-use goods from foreign organizations operating in China.

Experts believe that this step could affect the strategic balance in the Asia-Pacific region and further increase tension in trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Tension due to Beijing’s action

The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China has clearly stated in its official statement that any activity related to dual-use goods should be stopped immediately if it may be related to military use. The ministry also warned that strict action would be taken if the rules are violated. China has implemented additional monitoring mechanisms in relation to the 20 companies that have been placed on the watch list.

Now any supplier exporting from China to these companies will have to first apply for an export license. Along with this, a detailed risk management report will have to be submitted, in which it should be made clear for what purpose the concerned goods will be used. Along with this, it will also be mandatory to give a formal undertaking (undertaking), in which it will have to be assured that the dual-use goods will not be used in Japan’s military activities. Analysts believe that this step is not just a trade control, but also a strategic message, through which China wants to strictly enforce its stance on regional security and the Taiwan issue.
