ITR Filing deadline: Now just two days are left to end the deadline for filing income tax return (ITR). The Income Tax Department said on Saturday that they have received returns of more than six crore people so far for assessment year 2025-26. While the professional body is urging the government to extend the last date. In view of this, the Income Tax Department has also advised all those who have not yet filed ITR for the assessment year 2025-26, they should file their returns as soon as possible to avoid hurry at the last moment.

The Income Tax Department said in a post on X, “Thanks to taxpayers and tax professionals who have so far helped us reach the target of 6 crore income tax returns (ITR) and this number is still going on.” Also, the department also informed that their helpdesk is working round the clock for filing returns and related services. This year, the last date for filing non-audit returns was extended from July 31 to September 15 due to delay in release of updated ITR form. The number of returns submitted so far is less than last year. By July 31, 2024, 7.6 crore ITRs were deposited. Till 13 September, this year the number was about six crores.

Demand to increase deadline

Professional bodies including Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), Central India Regional Council and Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA) wrote a letter to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), asking for the delays in the portal, delays, delays in utility services, some parts of the country demanded extending time Is.
