IndiGo DGCA Action: The irregularities in the operation of IndiGo’s flights in the month of December are now becoming difficult for the company. Considering these incidents as serious, the country’s aviation monitoring body Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken strict action against the airline on January 16.

The impact of this action is not limited to the rules only, but is also going to be heavy on the pockets of Indigo. Including fines, compensation to passengers and ticket refunds, the total expenditure on the company could be more than Rs 1,180 crore.

DGCA action, fine and strict instructions on Indigo

Aviation regulator DGCA has taken a tough stance against IndiGo and imposed a fine of Rs 22.20 crore on it. This action has been taken due to repeated violations of Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules and deficiencies found at the system level. This includes a lump sum fine of Rs 1.80 crore. Whereas for not following the rules for 68 days, an additional penalty of Rs 20.40 crore has been added.

Along with the fine, DGCA has also directed IndiGo to deposit a bank guarantee of Rs 50 crore. This guarantee will be kept under the Indigo Systematic Reform Assurance Scheme (ISRAS) scheme.

The guarantee amount will be retained until the regulator ensures that the airline has fully implemented the necessary reforms related to monitoring system, manpower planning, rostering system and digital operations. As improvements are seen in these works, the regulator will release the guarantee amount in different phases.

Pressure increased due to compensation and refund

According to the company, it has been decided to compensate the passengers who suffered a lot due to the huge disturbances in the flights in December. More than Rs 500 crore will be compensated as compensation. This includes those people whose flights were canceled within 24 hours of the flight and who were stuck at the airport.

Additionally, IndiGo has decided to give a “Gesture of Care” voucher of Rs 10,000 to passengers traveling on flights that were canceled or delayed by more than three hours between December 3 and 5, 2025. Passengers can use this voucher for one year.
